Reasons Every Family Should Have an Emergency Fund

Years ago, a man would start working for a company as a young person and knew that the company would take care of him. He would work at the job until he reached retirement age and was sent off with a gold watch. Things have changed quite a bit since those days. No one has job security any longer. This is one of the many reason why families need an emergency fund.

It's not good to live from paycheck to paycheck. Suppose something happens to your refrigerator or washing machine? If you have to attend a funeral and fly across the country, where do you get the money? Every day you probably spend money that you do not have to spend. If you could put that aside, it might help you sleep better at night.

The sooner you get your emergency fund started, the better off for your family. We never expect the unexpected. Starting a family fund is a way to prepare for the unexpected emergencies in life.

According to financial experts, you should have about three to six months of expenses put aside. This means that you would have everything you need for your monthly expenses for three months in a savings account. If your bills are $2,000 a month, you should have at least $6,000 in the bank, preferably as much as $12,000.

Living from paycheck to paycheck can be frightening. You need to find ways to save a little bit of money each day. Think about the things that you spend money on each day. If you eat out a lot, you can save quite a bit of money simply by cooking. Curb your entertainment expenses. Five Tips to Help You Survive an Economic Disaster

People always seek the services of a painter, mover, or someone who does general housework. These extra jobs can bring in additional cash.

5 Tips to Reduce Credit Card Debt

With the recession and grim economic downturn, everyone is feeling the effects in their daily lives. For some, however, having credit card debt can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. If this applies to you, here are five tips to reduce credit card debt.

Pay down your debt.
Use the “snowball” method, which works as follows: Make a list of your credit cards and place the card with the highest rate of interest first, then the second highest rate, and so on. For the card with the highest rate, add an additional $25, $50, or $100 (whatever you can afford) to the minimum payment due. This will be the amount you pay every month.

When the first credit card is paid off, apply the same amount you paid for the first card to the second card (add additional money if you can). Once the second credit card is paid, move on to the third card and so forth until all debts are paid.

Keep one credit card
But for emergencies only and leave it at home in a safe place. Pay for anything you buy with cash. If you can’t afford it; don’t buy it.

Call the credit card companies and ask to have your interest rate reduced.

Get Help
If you need assistance, seek out a certified financial counselor who can help you come up with a plan to pay off your debt.

Home equity loan
To avoid bankruptcy, you may wish to take out a home equity loan that will enable you to pay off all debts you have incurred. What is frugal living?
Let’s begin by talking about what frugal living is not. It is not a way to get everything for free. I watched an episode of Oprah once where people went around finding free deals on everything. They stayed at hotels that had free breakfast and sent away for every free thing offered in ads in magazines.

Frugal living is a way of thinking that leads to a better sense of financial responsibility.
We all want to save more and spend less, but many of us don’t know where to begin to make a change in our lifestyle.

This is a way to save a little cash but it is not frugal living. Frugal living involves a budget. After all, we should all have some sort of budgeting plan so that we don’t spend too much money. Even if you make enough to splurge each month, isn’t your extra money better suited for investments where it can make you more money?

Frugal living is not as hard as one might think.
It doesn’t involve us going cold turkey with our spending. In fact, the best way to begin a frugal lifestyle is to take one area at a time and make small changes. These small changes will lead to more substantial things down the road.

Creating a budget.
The first thing that someone interested in living more frugally has to do is determine where the money is going now. If you make $2,500 a month, but at the end of the month you are scraping by, there is a problem. Track where the money is going by creating a budget.

The budget allows you to keep a paper or electronic trail of your transactions. Most of us lose hundreds of dollars through the ATM. Since it is cash in hand, we forget where it goes. Keep all of your receipts.

Once you know where it goes, you can find ways to divert it to the places where you need it to go. That’s a big part of frugal living — sending your money in specific directions. Money can be saved for a summer trip or a new deck on your home. Finding the money for the job is possible when you make frugal choices on a daily basis.

Enlist the aid of your family. It is hard to turn a ship unless you have the help of the entire crew. Let them know the game plan and work together to come up with ways to achieve your goal. Saving for a college education or a family trip means less eating out, more meals cooked together in the kitchen, less expensive entertainment ideas, and conserving energy.

Before you know it, you will be living the frugal way and actually enjoying more perks. With more money in the bank, there is a cushion for emergencies and money for at least one major “want” a year. Give it a shot and see how it goes. The only thing you have to lose is excess spending.

How to make an achievable "Get Out of Debt" Plan

When you have an overabundance of debt, it's natural to want to get rid of it as quickly as possible. Interest costs can really add up, and having too much debt makes it difficult or impossible to take on debt for things you need. But when we're faced with more debt than we can handle, it is important not to panic.

Getting out of debt on one's own is best if it's possible. But many debtors make the mistake of trying to pay their debts off too quickly. They set unrealistic goals, and when they can't achieve them they become discouraged. This often ends with them filing bankruptcy, because they feel that there is no way around it.

The best course of action is to be realistic. Make a budget and learn to be frugal, and include everything that you spend money on each month. Then find what you can realistically do without, and put the money you save on those things toward paying off your debt. Here are some things we can often cut out of the budget:

Learn to be frugal

  • Eating out. Whether you pick up fast food for lunch when you're working, or go out to eat with friends at a fancy restaurant once a week, you can cut costs here. Take your lunch to work, and have dinner with your friends once a month instead of once a week. Or better yet, suggest a less expensive activity that you can do together.
  • Vices. Cigarettes, lattes, and other things we buy as a matter of habit are good places to cut back. Quitting smoking is good for you anyway, and switching to regular coffee, made at home with some flavored creamer, would be less expensive. Every little bit helps.
  • Entertainment. No one's saying that you have to sit at home and be bored all of the time. Just examine your entertainment budget and see if there are ways you could cut back. If you rent a lot of movies, for example, consider signing up for an unlimited plan.
  • Travel. With gas prices usually going up instead of down, cutting back on travel can be a real money saver. Carpooling, and combining trips as much as possible, are two ways that can save you a substantial amount of money on travel.

It could takes years of frugal effort

It may take you several months or even a few years to get your debt paid off, depending on how much debt you're in and how much extra money you can put toward it each month. But as long as you're able to make your minimum payments and add a little extra to at least one of your bills each month, you will be making progress. You'll also be keeping your credit in good shape by making the payments on time. Just be patient, and you will eventually be debt-free.

If you find you have any of the signs of to much debt you should consider getting advice from a relevant organisation. But please be cautious of advice from organisations that charge you a fee or a percentage to manage your debt on your behalf.
They can offer consolidation loans, to use the equity in your house or otherwise restructure the debt.
The hook is a new lower monthly repayment.
These repayments are mainly interest with little actually being paid off the debt itself. Thus keeping you in debt and paying them interest over long periods of time.
This is Compound Interest working against you and for the lender.

Remember the aim is to get out of debt, not take on extra or prolong existing debt.

Frugal Dignity, Healthy Recipes

A bit less serious post today. Here are some tasty heathy frugal recipes to try instead of eating out.

BBQ Chicken Wings with Mint & Lemon

2 tbsp sunflower oil
1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
1 tbsp garlic, crushed
Juice of 2 lemons
½ tsp black pepper
2 tbsp fresh mint, chopped
Chicken wings

In a bowl, mix together all ingredients and pour over the chicken wings. Allow to stand and marinate for at least 2 hours. Then BBQ the chicken wings until no longer pink inside (about 5 minutes each side).

Homemade Fish Fingers

1/3 cup bread crumbs
1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
½ tsp paprika
1 lb white fish fillets, cut into fingers (approx. 3” long x ½” wide)
1 tbsp butter, melted
½ tsp dried parsley
1 egg

Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Beat the egg in a small shallow dish. In a separate shallow dish, combine bread crumbs, cheese, parsley and paprika. Dip the fish strips first into the egg, then into the breadcrumb mixture.

Lightly grease a baking sheet. Place the breaded fish fingers onto the baking sheet, drizzle with the melted butter and bake in the oven until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily (about 7 – 10 minutes).

Your kids will love the fish fingers. Serve with homemade fries and a tossed salad.

Superhealthy Bean and Spinach Casserole

8oz uncooked black beans, washed
1 lb fresh baby spinach, roughly chopped
3 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp cumin powder
6 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic, crushed
Salt and pepper to taste

Place uncooked beans in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and boil for about 5 minutes. Strain. Cover beans with fresh water again, add lemon juice and cook covered for about 20 minutes.

Add the spinach to the beans, season with salt and pepper and simmer for a further 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a skillet and sauté the garlic. Stir in the cumin powder and stir constantly for a few minutes. Add the garlic mixture to the casserole, mix well, adjust your seasoning and serve immediately with a bowl of couscous.

Fish Soup for a Crowd
Serves 10 or more!

1 green pepper, chopped
1 red pepper, chopped
1 cup carrots, chopped
2 cups onion, chopped
2 cups celery, chopped
4 medium potatoes, cubed
2 tsp garlic, minced
8 oz clam juice
1 cup white wine
1 cup water
2 (28oz) cans chopped tomatoes
½ tsp basil
½ tsp oregano
½ tsp pepper
2 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp fresh parsley
2 lb fresh white fish fillets, broken into big chunks

In a large pot, heat the oil. Add chopped peppers, celery, onion, garlic and carrots and cook for about 15 minutes. Add the potatoes, clam juice, water and stir. Then add basil, oregano, pepper and parsley and bring to a quick boil. Lower temperature to medium and simmer the soup until the potatoes are beginning to soften. Add the cans of tomatoes and simmer for a further 30 minutes. Add the fish chunks for the last 3 minutes. Adjust seasoning.

Let the soup stand for a little while, then serve with crusty French bread.

Brunchtime Sweetcorn Fritters

1 can sweetcorn, drained
1 can creamed corn
2 eggs
2 tsp baking powder
3 cups plain flour
1 cup milk (or more if needed)
Pinch cayenne pepper

Maple syrup for dipping

Combine all ingredients (except maple syrup) in a bowl. Heat some oil in a frying pan. Drop sweetcorn mixture from a big spoon and fry each side until fritters are cooked through and golden brown.

Serve immediately with maple syrup.

Bills start to get on top of you when you suddenly realize you are paying out more money that you think you can afford. This can happen suddenly if you have to pay something you didn’t normally pay, or due to lack of overspending, or interest rates going up.
For whatever reason, when the bills start to get on top of you, you have to take action quickly before it becomes a real problem. The longer you ignore your bills, the bigger the shock you will get when you finally decide to face them. So its better to face them now.

The best way to face your bills is to be completely honest with yourself. You need to find out exactly how much you are paying out monthly. If you make a list of all the bills you have to pay, the total amount can sometimes be a shock. If this happens then you know you are doing the right thing by finding out what you have to pay now rather than finding out later when things can get worse. Once you have listed everything you have to pay out regularly then you can make positive steps to sorting it out.

The best way to cope with debt is to stay calm and spend some time thinking about how you are going to make the situation better. It takes a long time to get into debt and you should spend a good amount of time realizing what your situation is and thinking about the best plan of action to take.
